PADEL Rules

Padel is usually played in pairs, with 2 players on each side. The essential equipment is the padel racket, which must be attached to the wrist using the loop for safety. The ball is similar to a tennis ball but slightly smaller and with lower pressure.

How to Play

  • The ball may bounce only once on the player’s side.
  • Only one player may hit the ball before it crosses to the opponent's side.
  • The ball can be hit in the air (volley), after it bounces once, or after it bounces once and then hits the wall.
  • Remember, the ball may only bounce once on the ground, but it may hit multiple walls afterward.

Serve

  • The point begins with a serve: first bounce the ball on the ground, then hit it at or below waist height.
  • For the first serve, stand behind the service box on the right (marked by a white line).
  • After that, alternate between the right and left service boxes.
  • The ball must be hit diagonally into the opponent's service box.
  • After bouncing, the ball may touch the back or side glass walls.
  • The opponent may return the ball either before or after it hits the wall.
  • A serve cannot be returned as a volley.
  • Remember: the ball may bounce only once on the ground.
  • Like in tennis, there are two serve attempts; if both fail, the point goes to the opponent.

Serve Faults

  • The ball hits the net.
  • The ball hits the wall on the opponent’s side before bouncing on the ground.
  • The ball does not land in the diagonal service box.
  • The ball lands in the correct box, but after bouncing, it hits the side mesh.
  • If the ball touches the net and then falls into the correct service box, the serve must be repeated.

Scoring

15 – 30 – 40 – game
If both teams reach 40-40, it’s called deuce. The next point gives advantage to the team who wins it. If the same team wins the next point, it’s game. If not, it goes back to deuce. So a team must win two consecutive points after 40-40 to win the game.

Set

  • A set consists of 6 games.
  • Teams switch sides after every odd-numbered game.
  • A set is won with a two-game lead (e.g., 6-4 or 7-5).
  • At 6-6, a tiebreak is played to 7 points (must win by 2, e.g., 7-5, 8-6, 9-7).
  • A match is won by winning two sets.

Tips and Tricks

  • Stand with knees bent and feet apart (ready position) to move quickly.
  • Hold the racket in front of you with both hands above hip level to prepare for the ball.
  • Don’t swing too wide like in tennis — use a shorter, more direct movement. Quickly return to the ready position.
  • You can use spin, but sliced shots are most effective — the ball stays low and is harder to reach.
  • Practice high lobs to prevent your opponent from smashing at the net.
  • Vary your shots: slice, lob, full power to the back, or close to the glass. The more unpredictable your play, the better.
  • Grip: Use a "hammer grip" to hold the racket.
  • You can play a backhand shot with one or two hands, whichever is more comfortable.

You Lose the Point If...

  • The ball bounces twice on your side.
  • The ball hits the wall first on the opponent’s side, then the ground.
  • You hit the ball into your own net.
  • You commit two serve faults.
  • The ball hits you or your partner.
  • You or your racket touch the net after hitting the ball — even accidentally. (For example, if you run forward and touch the net after a successful return, the point goes to the opponent.)
